Bihar Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav Stands Firm Against Women's Reservation Bill, Voices Concerns for OBCs
In a bold stance, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav has issued a stern warning to the ruling BJP at the Centre regarding the Women's Reservation Bill, emphasizing that the rights of the "aware and assertive" OBCs must not be compromised.
Tejashwi Yadav, a young leader from the RJD, has also raised questions about the intentions of the Narendra Modi government in introducing the bill, which stipulates that quotas would only be implemented after a fresh delimitation process following an upcoming census.
"The OBCs constitute nearly 60 percent of the total population. I want to make it crystal clear that any attempt to infringe upon their rightful share will not go unchallenged. They know how to assert their claims," Yadav conveyed in an interview with PTI.
He further added, "The OBCs are socially aware and are well-versed in fighting for their rights. Any malicious attempts in this direction will result in the complete dismantling of the edifice."

Yadav's strong words reflect concerns that the Women's Reservation Bill might have adverse consequences for the numerically significant OBCs unless it guarantees proportional representation for women within this social group.
Accusing the BJP of engaging in "sectarian politics," Yadav remarked, "The bill appears to have been introduced to deceive the people. We have never seen legislation that promises implementation in the distant future." He pointed out that the census, originally scheduled for 2021, has yet to be conducted. Even if it begins immediately after the Lok Sabha elections, followed closely by delimitation, the entire process may not conclude before 2029-30, according to Yadav.
It's worth noting that the RJD, led by Lalu Prasad, a prominent figure in the Mandal movement, has taken a more assertive position on the Women's Reservation Bill compared to its allies, including the Congress and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JD(U).
While the Congress and JD(U) support the demand for women's representation from marginalized sections and voted in favor of the bill when it passed in the Lok Sabha, the RJD, currently without members in the Lower House of Parliament, insists that a "quota within a quota" must be introduced for OBC women for the bill to hold significance.
